Just beyond the artisanal shop of Casena and Mozza’s oceanfront dining pavilion at the Marina Village on the Sea of Cortez is an unassuming alley that leads to the new Costa Palmas lounge + nightclub: Chiki. The first of many projects led by Martin Brudnizki Design Studio (MBDS) brings together raw authenticity and rich Mexican culture.

“You hear the music and feel the energy, but you have to find it,” says Jason Grosfeld, founder of the development company, Irongate. “Like many of the areas we have developed at Costa Palmas, there is an element of exploration to the village, with hidden gems like the lounge + nightclub, where you can catch up with friends on the dancefloor after a day on the beach.”

The nightclub certainly feels like a universe all its own. Inspired by La Casa Azul in Mexico City, especially its architectural configurations, the nightclub’s interiors are eclectic in style yet retain a uniquely Mexican feel that plays to a fresh generation of cultural enthusiasts and modern-day travelers.

The bar area is draped in colorful fabrics to create an intimate cocooning effect gracefully juxtaposed with statement-glass chandeliers and antique mirrors that stretch across the bar to reflect the geometric tiled floors. MBDS worked closely with mosaic artist, Celso, to create show-stopping murals that draw inspiration from folk art and traditions, particularly the significance of the sun and moon within Mexican culture.

The speakeasy aesthetic offers a variety of seating experiences, including intimate booths designed for relaxing before or after hitting the dance floor, and outdoor seating in a central courtyard area. And everywhere, there are murals and mosaics that bring walls to life in a deeply rooted Mexican way. A color palette of reds, oranges, and greens lends drama and excitement while colored lighting help create a cantina vibe throughout the dining and bar areas.

“The location was just as important as the details of the space,” says Jason Grosfeld. The nightclub is a first taste of what is coming from MBDS, which will soon bring Grosfeld’s vision to life with Casa Blake, the first boutique resort and residences at Costa Palmas Marina Village.

Come sip on an El Rey (featuring home-aged santanera tequila, pink peppercorn, antica formula, luxardo cherry, and orange bitters), a Diablito (made with mezcal, lime, simple syrup, baked pineapple and chamoy), or one of the many delicious, bespoke cocktails shaken behind the mosaic bar.

Timbers Company, developer and operator of properties in over 15 diverse high-end destinations, has announced the addition of Pākela ‘Ike at Hōkūala, a private cul-de-sac community comprised of 24 half-acre homesites on Kaua’i.

Situated within the 450-acre Hōkūala resort community, the new development is just steps from world-class golf, amenities, dining, trails, and beaches. Framed by spectacular mountain or ocean views, these graciously sized homesites range from $695,000 to $1.1 million. A number of homesites are already reserved with the first homes anticipated to be completed by early 2024.

“Pākela ‘Ike at Hōkūala offers buyers with an opportunity to build their own utopia within a unique neighborhood that offers both luxury and privacy, yet immersed in the epicenter of the Kaua’i community and at an arm’s reach of the Pacific Ocean,” stated Debbie Edgerton, Senior Sales Executive at Hōkūala Real Estate. “These rare, half-acre homesites are located at the true heart of the expansive Hōkūala enclave, featuring convenient access to not only a bevy of luxury amenities but also the unbridled beauty of its terrain, ranging from wetlands and tropical rainforest to a rugged coastline and winding lagoons.”

Envisioned for buyers looking to plant roots in Kaua’i in harmony with the land and local community, Pākela ʻIke was named to evoke two complementary concepts in the Hawaiian language—Pākela, meaning “surpassing excellence,” and ‘Ike, meaning “visionary or knowledge.” The residential haven was inspired by the Hawaiian culture’s reverence for meaningful connection and perfectly situated for residents looking to begin their own family legacy on Kaua’i.

“The addition of Pākela ʻIke within Hōkūala’s 450-acre coastal community invites our buyers to forge a deeper, more meaningful connection to the spirit of the island as they build their dream home,” stated Chris Burden, Chief Development Officer at Timbers Resorts. “These homesites are surrounded by Kauaʻi’s untamed natural beauty unlike anything else currently available on the market, not only in Hawaii but across the globe.”

THE LAND

Offering the most private residential resort setting in Kaua’i, Pākela ʻIke is nestled in a verdant emerald sanctuary surrounded by Kauai’s mystic mountain ranges once used by voyagers to navigate through the Pacific’s azure waters.

The low-density nature of Hōkūala coupled with the rare, generous sized homesites afford owners privacy and tranquility without sacrificing convenience with a host of amenities just mere minutes away. Hōkūala’s coveted location perched along Kauai’s southeastern shore offers owners the opportunity to fully immerse in the idyllic, sensory beauty of the Garden Island, from the gentle salt spray along the shoreline to the fragrant aromas of the rainbow eucalyptus forest and blossoming plumeria found throughout its fertile grounds.

THE BUILD

Aligned with Hōkūala’s philosophy of integrating and blending into the Hawaiian lifestyle, the people, the structures and the developed environment, Pākela ʻIke offers an architectural style that delves deeper into the soul and spirit of Hawaii and harmonizes with the natural environment. Buyers are provided with thoughtful guidelines to ensure their future homes mirror historic Hawaiian design themes and motifs utilizing natural materials while harnessing the island’s climate to maximize cross ventilation, natural sunlight and vistas of the ocean, mountains, and adjacent Ocean Course golf course. To ensure a seamless process, the Pākela ʻIke homesites feature a Preferred Vendor Program, bringing together the expertise of renowned architects, designers, landscape architects and builders to help buyers effortlessly custom design their dream Hawaiian retreat. An on-site team has been created specifically to help navigate the permitting and construction process and are available every step of the way through planning, design, permitting and construction. Buyers will have the ability to create graciously sized two-story homes with a minimum of 2,000 interior square feet and are encouraged to both build traditional lanais to provide sheltered outdoor living spaces as well as utilize materials, textures, and artworks native to Kaua’i. Buyers can also incorporate plunge pools and indoor/outdoor showers to further underline the indoor/outdoor lifestyle afforded by this beloved subtropical climate. Those building within Pākela ʻIke community are also encouraged to create their own personal oasis incorporating a variety of canopy trees, lush palms and shrubs as well as traditional canoe plants first brought to the island by Pacific settlers.

HŌKŪALA – KAUAI’S RISING STAR

Owners at Pākela ʻIke will have the benefit of living within Hōkūala, slated to be Kaua’i’s most comprehensive resort community. As a subdivision of Hōkūala, Pākela ʻIke’s residents will have access to a growing list of luxury amenities including priority tee times at the award-winning signature Jack Nicklaus course, The Ocean Course; agrication experiences at The Farm at Hōkūala, a 16.5-acre Organic farm and orchard; farm-to-fork cuisine at the award-winning Hualani’s restaurant; traditional Hawaiian spa services at Nanea Spa; and over 17 miles of trails weaving through a wildlife sanctuary home to five different endangered bird species. Additionally, Hōkūala will be welcoming tennis and pickleball courts currently under construction; a forthcoming four-star hotel complete with new dining venues; a luxury retail complex, several boat docks located along the property’s 30 acres of meandering lagoons for kayaking, paddleboarding, canoeing, etc. Both existing and forthcoming community elements are rooted in authenticity and sustainability to formulate a genuine Kaua’i experience for generations to come.

LOCAL REAL ESTATE MARKET

The island of Kaua’i is only 562.30 square miles in size and much of it is uninhabitable, or difficult to reach, limiting new residential construction opportunities. The launch of these 24 Pākela ‘Ike homesites and recent ground-breaking of Timbers’ 12 Lāola Nani townhomes in late 2021, slated for completion in Summer 2023, brings forth much needed inventory to meet market demand. The property continues to attract buyers seeking to work from paradise, connect with loved ones, or simply live the spirit of Aloha. Hōkūala Real Estate closed over $39 million in new and resale residences in 2022.

South Florida’s iconic resort and private club, The Boca Raton, celebrates the opening of Tower, its fully reimagined fifth hotel. Following a $65 million transformation, the 27-story Tower, situated next to the newly constructed Harborside Pool Club, showcases expansive suites, breathtaking vistas, and distinct programming that deliver an unmatched experience for families and travelers of all ages.

“The relaunch of Tower is a significant milestone in the evolution of The Boca Raton. It further defines our property as one of the world’s most distinguished resorts and private clubs, setting a new standard for luxury hospitality,” said Daniel A. Hostettler, President & CEO of The Boca Raton. “It was integral to our long-term strategy to create five distinct hotels, each offering a unique experience.”

Tower’s story began in 1969 when its unveiling marked a majestic enhancement to the Boca Raton skyline as the City’s tallest building. Paying homage to the pink hues of Boca Raton, the Tower’s exterior has been refreshed to a light Coastal Pink. Inside, 244 spacious rooms and suites are fully reimagined by architecture and design firm Rockwell Group. Contemporary and flexible configurations include connecting suites and entire floor takeovers, ideal for multi-generational families and groups of friends. Bright and airy with warm wood accents, each room features sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean and coastline. As described by Shawn Sullivan, Partner at Rockwell Group, “We redesigned the rooms with a contemporary coastal feel imbued with a sense of casual luxury to flaunt the spectacular 360-degree views. This meant adding built-in window seating, bleached wood furniture, neutral linen fabrics, fluted feature walls and classic molding.”

In addition to a reimagined interior, the experience has also been reinvented. Tower’s dedicated butlers provide a range of services from the practical to the magical. And for high-touch service blended with modern technology (and a touch of whimsy), young guests can opt for a snack delivery from one of two Tower robot butlers, Johnnie and Ethel, named after the monkey pets of The Boca Raton’s original owner and famed architect Addison Mizner.

On the second floor, Tower Lounge is an exclusive hideaway for hotel guests to relax, connect, or simply disconnect throughout the day. Enjoy complimentary morning pastries and coffee, afternoon snacks, and as a special weekend treat, a Sundae Bar. Opportunities to unwind abound, from a listening lounge with beautifully crafted headphones by premium audio brand Master & Dynamic, to a classic games area, and an exclusive book-lending library curated in partnership with Assouline.

Other experiential collaborations were designed to provide engaging sensory opportunities, including an NFT art collection curated by Lynn University NFT Museum, on display in Tower’s lobby. Guests can view one-of-a-kind original artwork from notable and up-and-coming artists who are transforming the art world through breakthrough technology.

Tower is just steps from a myriad of extraordinary experiences across The Boca Raton’s 200-waterfront-acres. Activities cater to all interests, from an 18-hole golf course, and Racquet Club with 16 tennis courts and six pickleball courts, to the award-winning Spa Palmera, seven swimming pools, and a private golden beach. One of South Florida’s most exclusive culinary destinations, The Boca Raton has reimagined its drink and dine program with more than a dozen new restaurants and lounges, including four signature concepts in collaboration with Major Food Group – Japanese Bocce Club, Principessa Ristorante serving Italian classics, The Flamingo Grill chophouse, and celebrated brunch hotspot Sadelle’s. Still to come, lakeside all-day dining at Harbor House, which will open this winter next to a to-go eatery, Burger Bar.

Handcrafted mosaic art company Mozaico has recently completed a dazzling custom artwork for the iconic Mayfair House Hotel and Garden in Coconut Grove neighborhood of Miami, Florida. The mosaic medallion, some 12 feet in diameter, creates a sense of movement and dimension in the newly renovated hotel lobby.

The custom mosaic was assembled from from the 30,000 hand-cut marble stones, that were set by hand into the piece in a process that took eight expert craftsmen more than 16 weeks. Pieces of cut marble were added one-by-one using tweezers or fingers to map out the linework in the early stage of bringing the mosaic to life.

The medallion has a deceptively minimalist design in a palette or blue, white, and gray. However, upon closer inspection, there is an expansive range of shades and tones at play. The rendering and design of the mosaic were created in close collaboration with interior designers responsible for the Mayfair renovation project. Mozaico’s team searched far and wide for the highest quality marble in colors that precisely matched the intricate design and create a sense of depth, shade, and movement.

When the piece was complete, Mozaico placed it on a football field in order to photograph the final artwork, due to its impressive scale.

The Mayfair, which was designed by architect Kenneth Treister and built in 1985, reopened in September after a $50 million renovation. The newest iteration of the hotel is focused on art and culture, featuring the work of photographers, sculptures, folk artists, and more, as well as rooms that each have their own unique style.

ROAM Maui officially launches as the newest semi-private air carrier in the skies, offering direct weekly flights between Maui’s Kahului Airport (OGG) and the three mainland cities of Los Angeles, San Jose, and Seattle.  ROAM Maui is creating the ultimate private club in the sky by operating exclusively as a membership-based air shuttle service.

ROAM Maui is the first service of its kind to Maui and will introduce a new class of air travel, blending the exclusivity and ease of flying private with the economies of scale of commercial aircraft.  All flights will utilize private airport lounge departures and arrivals for hassle-free boarding, easy hop-on/hop-off booking policies and Air Concierge services from the time of booking to the onboard experience and beyond.

This reimagined travel experience was born to fulfill the needs of Maui homeowners who travel frequently between the mainland U.S. and their Valley Isle home. Qualified homeowners have the advantage of a vertical family membership model that allows a family and their guests (four-legged companions included) to travel with ROAM Maui on a yearly basis with each membership.  Additionally, membership plans are part of a limitless, all-you-can-fly program, meaning unlimited flights throughout the year with no blackout dates.

For residents of Maui accustomed to flying private to and from the island, the annual ROAM Maui membership fee costs less than a single round trip on an executive private jet, allowing more passengers to travel with new senses of security, discretion and a commitment to a more balanced environment.  This semi-private model greatly reduces the carbon impact by taking executive jets out of the sky from members flying their own jets to the island, saving an estimated 60 million pounds of Co2 emissions per year.

The ROAM Maui Experience

ROAM Maui flights are flown on two specialized, VIP-configured Boeing 737-700s.  The all-first-class planes feature just 58 first-class seats, complete with a new interior refurbishment, state-of-the-art purification system, ultra-fast WiFi and the latest StageTM On Demand entertainment system.

As the Turtle Bay Resort in Oahu nears the end of its multiyear transformation, the iconic property is rolling out new experiences, new activities, and new culinary offerings, just in time for the fall and winter travel season.

The onsite restaurant Alaia has debuted a new menu of its signature modern Hawaiian fare conceptualized by the newly appointed, Hawaiian-born, executive chef Lyle Kaku. Many of the dishes incorporate produce harvested at the resort’s on-property Kuilima Farm. The Big Island kampachi tartare is a dish of fresh yellowtail drenched in yuzu ponzu, topped with umeboshi (japanese pickled plum), pickled ginger, shiso leaf, and crispy rice crackers. The roasted moa is a Samoan-inspired dish of roasted chicken served alongside a creamy corn pudding that uses corn from Kulima Farm.

Also new to the slate of offerings since last winter are the Paniolo dinner series and immersive programming offerings at Kuilima Farm.

In the dinner series visitors will learn about Paniolo a cowboy subculture that migrated from Mexico and California. The weekly dinners celebrate Hawaii’s rich ranching and cowboy heritage, complete with an outdoor roast dinner and other traditional Paniolo ranch dishes, storytelling, and entertainment for the whole family. As the sun begins to set, performers will wow attendees with a traditional dance and drum exhibition, followed by a hula performance.

The farm programming promises visitors immersive experiences on the property’s 468 acres of revitalized mountainside agricultural lands. Guests will be able to tour the farm with a local expert, to learn about the history of the area, the crops grown on the farm, and the islands’ food culture. They will also be able to taste produce straight from the ground, vine, and tree, and even pick their own.

Set on 1,300 acres along five miles of unspoiled coastline with secluded sandy beaches, a working farm, and world-renowned surf breaks, Turtle Bay has a long and rich history. The resort, which first opened in 1972, is nearing the end of a two-year reinvention that includes three new pools, an opened-up lobby that lets in more of the stunning natural views, a new pool bar, expansive oceanfront bungalows, and redesigned guest rooms.
