Taking over an iconic hotel built in 1924 on one of Palm Beach’s most fashionable main streets, The White Elephant is a 32-room boutique property (with 13 rooms and 19 suites spread across four stories) that offers the glamour of the 1920s with all the modern amenities of a five-star luxury hotel. 

The Addison Mizner–style facade was fully restored in creamy-white stucco, black trim, and terracotta roof tiles. Black-and-white striped awnings offer a polished, fabled look. Guests are welcomed by a seven-foot white elephant statue by Santa Fe–based artist Fredrick Prescott. 

Designed by Elkus Manfredi, the hotel has more of the feel of an upscale private residence, featuring a neutral color palette with metal accents, vibrant splashes of color, and more than 120 pieces of artwork, carefully curated by the owners and design firm, on display throughout the common areas and guest rooms. An original fireplace mantel welcomes guests in the lobby. The hardwood floors, Carrara marble, elegant tiles, and woven rugs offer a luxurious, textured contemporary style. 

Artists on display include Robert Rauschenberg, whose early creations in the 1950s anticipated the pop art movement, and Jennifer Bartlett, known for her small, square steel plates that are combined in grid formations to create large-scale works. Several pieces by painter Kenzo Okada, the first Japanese-American artist to receive international acclaim using abstract expressionist style, are on display, as are works by Donald Baechler, part of the East Village, New York, 1980s art movement.

A 54-inch-round acrylic work by Orit Fuchs was specifically created for the hotel and is a focal point of the lobby; six prints by Yinka Shonibare can be found on the second-floor corridor. Doodle Boy, a 10-year-old British artist, was commissioned to create 30 exclusive pieces for the powder rooms. Using clean black lines hand drawn with a thick marker, he incorporated a hidden signature elephant in each of his drawings. 

Each guest room door is outfitted with an elephant door knocker. Upon entering your spacious room, you are greeted with an impeccable designscape, featuring custom furniture and plush couches covered in soothing gray and cream-colored fabrics. The ultra dreamy king-sized beds are outfitted with Pratesi linens and upholstered backboards accented in a colorful palm and floral print. Console tables by Selamat Designs, in collaboration with Morris & Co., are wrapped inside and out with authentic William Morris “Strawberry Thief” covering. The bathrooms feature marble tiles, double stone sinks, a dry vanity, and glass-enclosed showers. Everything is automated including temperature, shades, and lighting, which can be set to any mood you wish. The guest rooms are so beautiful and comfortable, you may just forgo exploring the city.

 When you are ready to get some of Florida sunshine, an outdoor courtyard offers the perfect spot to relax or take a dip in the pool. The manicured grounds feature mature palm trees and lush, fragrant flora. White Elephant Palm Beach’s signature restaurant Lola 41—a Nantucket staple—serves globally inspired dishes and local seafood specialties. If you’re able to get a spot on the patio, I highly recommend it.

If you’re looking for scores of shops or a bustling nightlife, Kaua’i is probably not the place for you. However, Kaua’i beckons those who are laser-focused on the luxury of time—family time, downtime, and me time. 

One Kaua’i property stands in a class of its own: Timbers Kaua’i, part of the 450-acre Hōkūala resort on the southeast shore. The master-planned development features a Jack Nicklaus signature golf course, miles of winding trails, an organic farm, and more than 40 acres of winding lagoons, home to five species of endangered birds.

I recently traveled to Timbers to learn why families—like the wildlife—flock to this private oasis for a secluded, service-focused experience featuring luxurious island accommodations and amenities.

Live Effortlessly

Offering a seamless and personalized lifestyle, Timbers Kaua’i features 47 luxury residences, including two-, three-, and four-bedrooms for sale as whole ownership, residential interests, and nightly rentals—all mere steps from some of the most beautiful beaches in Hawai’i. Lavish appointments, thoughtfully curated art, and fully stocked kitchens enhance the experience.

In addition to the existing residences, the property’s newest phase is underway. When finished, it will consist of 36 three- and four-bedroom townhomes, each featuring multiple expansive outdoor lanais, disappearing glass walls, a private plunge pool, and detached carport. 

I had the good fortune of staying in a sprawling, three-bedroom residence with a breathtaking panoramic view of the lagoon, coastline, and mountains beyond. From the time I arrived to find my favorite wine chilled to my departure time, when a private car takes me to the airport, the team at Timbers ensures each detail is noted, personalized, and executed.

Future plans include single-family homesites, renovations to the clubhouse, and shopping, dining, and entertainment amenities. 

Stay to Play (and Recharge)

Kaua’i has resisted some of the commercialization and overwhelming tourism other islands have experienced. Still, there’s something for everyone to do on and near the property.

While the view from my residence’s lanai is spectacular, I sipped coffee in the oceanfront infinity pool each morning for a front-row seat to the sunrise. Throughout the visit, I spent time in the expansive pool and lounging on the surrounding deck, which is outfitted in ocean-facing lounge chairs and daybeds. 

Additional on-site experiences include everything from harvesting fresh ingredients at the farm to signature spa treatments. And while I loved relaxing at the spa, I made sure to take advantage of the abundance of outdoor adventures like kayaking and paddleboarding on the property’s protected lagoon. If you prefer clubs to paddles, take on Timbers Kaua’i’s 18-hole course, the Ocean Course at Hōkūala. A Jack Nicklaus signature design, the course, with its oceanfront fairways, makes great use of the surrounding natural landscape. Each hole is like a sunrise from the infinity spa—worthy of a thousand pictures. 

I also recommend venturing offsite for a few local experiences. Sleeping Giant offers a challenging climb with views that pay dividends—and a private guide from Timbers can join you on your journey! One of my favorite experiences was renting a beach cruiser in Kapa’a and wistfully pedaling along the coastline. And, of course, no visit to the island is complete without indulging in a shaved ice. Dreamy!

Tim Davis knows a thing or two about Hamptons real estate. A lifetime Hamptons resident, he’s one of the top brokers in the region after selling real estate there for more than four decades. Recently, the Wall Street Journal ranked Davis as the top real estate agent in the Hamptons, and tenth in the country. He’s brokered 38 transactions on the ocean in Southampton alone. 

Davis has negotiated more than $4 billion in sales over his career. His priciest sale clocked in at $137 million, and he’s sold such distinctive properties as Wooldon Manor in Southampton, owned by Gilded Age tycoons like the Woolworths and Edmund Lynch of Merrill Lynch and once considered the most opulent estate in the Hamptons. He’s also twice sold Westerly, a Southampton Georgian estate, most recently in 2010 for around $40 million to its current owner, fashion designer Tory Burch.

Davis himself lives with his family in a modest Southampton cottage. “I’m often inspired by what I see on the market,” he told Cottages & Gardens in 2016. “It was intentional not to build a mansion for ourselves. We wanted to build a home that we could live in and stay in for many, many years.”

Below, Davis chats about some of his favorite career highlights, market predictions, and why the Hamptons are such a sought-after location.

Why did you decide to become a real estate agent?  Sales have been my passion since an early age. I had close family ties in the Hamptons, and it was a natural career start for selling real estate. That was 42 years ago.

You’re a lifelong Hamptons resident, right? What do you love about where you live? The natural beauty is by far the most interesting factor for living in the Hamptons. The ocean, the bays, various other waterways. Big open sky views and incredible light. It’s what brought the artists to paint here and the wealthy summer set to build seaside mansions.   

How has work changed for you since the start of the pandemic? Initially, there was an “I must buy” thought process. New inventory everywhere and anywhere moved off the shelves. That turned to “We need to buy.” Knowing that the pandemic may continue or return in some form in the future, it makes sense to own an escape from urban settings for one’s health and safety. Now we are dealing with “we want to buy,” decisions made about lifestyle and the ability to work from home offices for many businesses. Why not live in the Hamptons full-time?

Do you have any predictions for the Hamptons housing market for the rest of 2022? Do you think the housing boom will continue? Do you think the Hamptons can handle a continued influx of new residents? I believe that our market will continue to remain strong throughout the year. The lack of inventory is a challenge we are managing with serious sellers. As for “infrastructure and influx of new residents,” that all seems to be being managed on all levels.

What do you consider one of your career’s biggest accomplishments? Being an owner of the luxury boutique real estate firm Allan M. Schneider Associates and selling to NRT/Corcoran in August of 2006.

Any advice for buyers and/or sellers right now? Seasoned brokers have historical knowledge and market data relative to trends and dealing with the ups, downs, and pauses of the Hamptons market.

What is one of the most interesting or unique properties you’ve ever sold? Wooldon Manor in Southampton. An oceanfront estate comprising fifteen acres for $75 million and 6 months later for $83 million.

What’s the priciest listing you’ve ever sold? $137,000,000 but that is a long story…  

What’s one of the most historical properties you’ve ever sold? Westerly, a 15,000-square-foot Georgian estate on over fifteen acres, once in 1991 and again in 2010.

Any properties currently listed that you’re particularly excited about right now? A spectacular oceanfront home in Montauk along Old Montauk Highway listed at $22.5 million. The house sits just above the sand with a pool and sensational coastline views. Thierry Despont was the designer on the renovation in 2010/2011. Also, an amazing 10-acre oceanfront site with 550 feet of frontage and access to Shinnecock Bay listed at $75 million.
